Above where the seals are in Kaikoura, we climbed up to the top of one hill in Kaikoura Pa. Pa's were areas constructed by Maori peoples as defense: the could retreat up hills and defend themselves. This pa was constructed around 1600. In the middle, across the way, the short hill just to the left of center has still-visible ridges in it that could be used to defend attacks from below.
